Are foods labeled "organic" just to hike up the price tag, or is there really a benefit to making the swap? In this article, we'll explore the benefits of organic foods and the differences between them and conventional foods found in stores today.

First, what does it mean for something to be organic? An organic food is described as a food that is grown or produced without the use of synthetic chemicals or genetically modified components. While not all organic foods are totally free of pesticides, even those that aren't have a significantly lower amount when grown under the USDA regulations. Why is this important? Because the use of pesticides and synthetic chemicals in our food have been linked to some startling health conditions.

Let's take a look at Roundup, a very popular pesticide that was used heavily by American farmers in recent years. In 2024, Bayer was ordered by the court to pay a Pennsylvania man $400 million dollars. The man claimed that Roundup gave him cancer and, based on the evidence presented, the court agreed with him. Roundup contains a chemical called glyphosate, which the WHO (World Health Organization) has classified as a possible carcinogen, yet it has been sprayed all over the foods we see in our stores. The case with the Pennsylvania man was not the only one; in fact, it's estimated that about 165,000 lawsuits have been filed against Bayer. While that may seem like plenty of evidence to say "no" to the use of pesticides in our food, some have argued that there is no link to cancer, and therefore have continued to encourage the use of Roundup.

Not only do organic farms steer clear of harsh chemicals, they also grow crops that are non-GMO. While some argue that non-GMO foods aren't harmful at all, others are not so sure. Remember Roundup? Well it turns out that many GMO crops are also sprayed with the very same glyphosate we discussed earlier. Not only that, but the genes that were intended to make the GMO crops more resilient have actually resulted in pests and weeds that have mutated to combat the gene-splicing, requiring even heavier and more toxic chemicals to kill them off and save the crops! And as if that wasn't enough, there are no long-term studies on the effects of GMOs on the human body. This means that even if these crops could be grown without the use of synthetic pesticides, they may or may not be beneficial for our bodies.

Just the cleanliness of organic foods should be enough to sing its praises, but there's more - organic foods benefit the earth too! Organic practices facilitate healthy soil, meaning the crops are more nutrient-dense. Moreover, the lack of pesticides encourages bees to pollinate and for natural wildlife to remain in the area, which is better for the environment as a whole.

This is why we choose to source organic ingredients, because we want our cakes to be as nourishing as they are delicious. It's not enough to make something look beautiful, we want the contents inside to be beneficial to your body and not harmful. We're proud to offer cakes that go against the grain to stand for your health, for nature, and the health of our farmers, who are so vital in our society.
